ADA Overview

American with Disabilities Act Accommodations

Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 are civil rights laws that offer protection to individuals with disabilities in the United States. The University accommodates students with disabilities in compliance with the laws that are set forth to protect students with disabilities. Further, the University is committed to its moral obligation to serve a diverse student population. The University is dedicated to providing reasonable accommodations needed to ensure equal access to educational opportunities for individuals with verified disabilities as well as ensuring the academic integrity of its program and courses. An ADA Coordinator is housed in the Academic Resource Center (ARC) to verify eligibility and coordinate services (as defined by Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act), while the highest standards of confidentiality are maintained. Students are required to self-identify for services and to provide required documentation. Forms for application process can be found on the ARC website at www.hssu.edu.com  or the ARC ADA office. Applications must be submitted to the ARC ADA office.

Harris-Stowe State University is committed to the provision of educational access for all students. As such, we aspire to the assurance the students with disabilities receive reasonable accommodations which support effective participation in all aspects of the educational experience. The university strives to remove barriers for individuals with various exceptionalities (disabilities) in accordance with the Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments (ADAA) of 2008 and 2009 ADA Reauthorization of which definitions of disabilities/impairments broadened.


HSSU Guiding Philosophy


Our guiding philosophy is to make facilities, programs and courses as practical and accessible to students with various exceptionalities as possible. It is the intent of Harris-Stowe State University to offer a well-rounded, quality experience to all students, as well as academic accommodations to qualified students with documented impairments.


Major Life Activities Considerations: A person with a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities: caring for oneself, performing manual tasks, seeing, hearing, eating, sleeping, walking, working, standing, lifting, bending, speaking, breathing, learning, reading, concentrating and thinking.


Reasonable Accommodations


Adjustments to policy, practice and programs that “level the playing field” for qualified students with a disability as well as provides equal access to programs and activities without altering fundamental goals of a course or lowering the standards of courses. (ADA and 504).


Services/classroom  Accommodations : Captioning, Assistive listening devices, Audio recordings of lectures/texts, Braille materials, Large print materials, Adapted computer terminals.
