1. WHAT ARE THE DEGREE PROGRAMS IN THE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION?

Early Childhood Education

Elementary Education
Areas of Concentration: Art, Biology, Computer Education, Computer Science, Early Childhood Education, Mathematics, Multicultural Education, Natural Science, Physical Education, Psychology, Social Science, Special Education (Currently offering Cross-Categorical Education), Speech and Theater, and Vocal Music

Middle School Education
Subject Areas: Mathematics, Social Science and Science

Secondary Education
Subject Areas: English, Mathematics, Social Science and Unified Science: Biology

2. IN WHAT AREAS ARE MISSOURI STATE CERTIFICATIONS ISSUED?

Early Childhood Education

3. WHAT TESTS DO I NEED TO COMPLETE TO MEET THE DEGREE REQUIREMENTS?

ACT, C-BASE, PRAXIS II

4. WHAT TESTS DO I NEED TO COMPLETE PER THE CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS?

PRAXIS II

5. WILL MY PREVIOUS WORK EXPERIENCE BE CREDITED TO MY CERTIFICATION?

No. The opportunities examined from your previous work-related experiences and or your previous higher-education experiences are important attributes that strengthen the HSSU learning environment. 

6. ONCE I COMPLETE MY DEGREE REQUIREMENTS AND OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS TO TEACH, IS FURTHER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT REQUIRED?

Yes. (Note that lifetime certification is no longer available in the state of Missouri.)

7. ARE THERE SPECIFIC ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS I MUST MEET TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR ADMISSION INTO A TEACHER EDUCATION DEGREE PROGRAM?

Yes. Requirements for admission include the following:
- Complete a degree-program admission application (http://www.hssu.edu/deptdocs/TEDapplication.pdf)
- Overall GPA 2.5
- All parts of C-BASE requirement successfully met (not required for certification candidates)
- ACT/SAT score on record
- All General Education courses successfully completed
- 60 hour Classroom Aide requirement successfully met (http://www.hssu.edu/deptdocs/11/TED60ClassAideDoc.pdf)
- Complete degree program admission interview application
- Participate in degree-program interview
- Successfully complete an on-site writing requirement

8. HOW WILL I COMPLETE THE OUTCOMES IDENTIFIED IN THE DEGREE PROGRAM ADMISSION PROTOCOL: PHASE I- RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION; PHASE II - INDUCTION; AND PHASE III - CANDIDACY?
Designed to address the College of Education’s assessment system, the experiences and outcomes are facilitated in respective courses (see the Teacher Education Conceptual Framework.)

9. HOW WILL I BE NOTIFIED?
By written correspondence from the dean of Education. Please keep your address current with the HSSU Registrar and the Office of the College of Education.

10. WHO IS MY MENTOR?
Mentors are assigned each semester. Students may secure a specific faculty mentor and or change a mentor assignment by submitting a written request to the dean of Education.

Department Faculty Mentors' duties/responsibilities are to:
1) Facilitate student engagement in successfully completing all degree program requirements.
2) Approve course registration and academic advisement planning.
3) Schedule on-going meetings/sessions to strengthen candidate performance and assist candidates in keeping abreast of all current issues/changes in certification requirements and in examining values, beliefs and dispositions, regarding best practice in a diverse democratic society.
