The College of Education: Certification

Students who intend to prepare for initial certification in Early Childhood, Elementarv School, Middle School or Secondary School Education must file a written application with the dean of Education. Candidates for initial certification must complete all college requirements and be approved by the directors of Admissions and Academic Advisement. See the Harris-Stowe State University University Bulletin for the details of teacher certification requirements. 

Students who have been admitted to the Teacher Education program, both degree-seeking and those seeking certification only, must meet Missouri Certification Standards. Any exception to this policy can be made only on the basis of approval of a student's formal petition to the vice president for Academic Affairs. 

Candidates for initial certification must successfully complete student teaching. See the Harris-Stowe State University University Bulletin for eligibility for admission to student teaching. Student teaching application and deadline dates are in the Harris-Stowe State University Course Schedule.

Certification may be obtained in the following teacher education specialties: 

1.    Early Childhood Education            

2.    Elementary Education    

3.    Middle School Education in: 

  • Mathematics
  • Natural Sciences
  • Social Science

    4.    Secondary Education in: 

  • Social Science
  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Unified Science-Biology
