Harris-Stowe State University's ROTC Program to Commission its First Army Officer

Nicholas Pruitt is the first HSSU student in the history of the Army Reserve Officers’ Training  Corps (ROTC) Gateway Battalion to be commissioned into the U.S. Army. The commissioning ceremony will be held on Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at 6 p.m. in the Bank of America Theatre at the Emerson Performance Center on the HSSU campus.

 

Harris-Stowe to Host Leadership Seminar as Part of Marine Week St. Louis on June 23, 2011

As part of Marine Week St. Louis, a week-long event showcasing the unique characteristics of America’s Corp, Harris-Stowe State University will host the Marine Corps Leadership Seminar on Thursday, June 23, 2011 at the William L. Clay Senior Early Childhood Development and Parenting Education Center, 10 North Compton Ave. “We are proud to have been chosen to host this important activity during Marine Week St. Louis on our campus,” Dr. Henry Givens, Jr., president of Harris-Stowe State University said. “Harris-Stowe and the Marine Corps share a passion for developing young adults into the leaders of tomorrow. This seminar will highlight how the Marine Corps teaches leadership and ethics, as well as discuss how their members overcome challenges.  These are critical life skills and lessons that we instill in our students each and every day at Harris-Stowe, as we prepare them for their future.”

Harris-Stowe to Hold 154th Commencement Convocation on May 10, 2011

Harris-Stowe State University will hold its 154th Commencement Convocation on Tuesday, May 10, 2011, at 7 p.m. at Powell Symphony Hall. More than 130 graduates will have their degrees conferred in the areas of teacher education, urban specializations and business. The keynote speaker for the evening is Cynthia J. Brinkley, senior vice president – talent development & chief diversity officer at AT&T and former member of the Harris-Stowe State University Board of Regents. Several honorary degrees and awards will be presented during the ceremony.

Harris-Stowe State University announced today that Cynthia J. Brinkley, senior vice president – talent development & chief diversity officer at AT&T, will serve as the keynote speaker for the University’s upcoming commencement. Ms. Brinkley is former president of AT&T Missouri and a past member of the University’s Board of Regents. This year’s ceremony will take place on Tuesday, May 10, 2011, at 7 p.m. at Powell Symphony Hall. More than 135 undergraduate degrees will be awarded that evening.

The announcement was made at a mid-morning press conference in the Bank of America Theatre at the Emerson Performance Center on the campus of Harris-Stowe.

Harris-Stowe Reaches out to Japan, Encourages Other Institutions to Do the Same

In the wake of the overwhelming damage and estimated 10,000 deaths caused by Friday’s 9.0-magnitude earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan, Harris-Stowe State University announced a campus-wide initiative to collect money to support the humanitarian relief efforts of the American Red Cross in Japan. This effort, which began today, is similar to past fundraising campaigns that provided relief and assistance to those affected by the Haitian earthquake and Hurricane Katrina.

Harris-Stowe State University Students to Volunteer and Serve Their Community in the Memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

More than 125 Harris-Stowe State University students will participate in a “Day of Service” to commemorate the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday on January 17, 2011. The University is partnering with Mayor Slay’s office, as well as Ameren and AmeriCorps St. Louis, to deliver 6,000 compact fluorescent light bulbs to residents of the 22nd ward. The student-led effort, whose goal is to help families maximize their energy efficiency and reduce their utility bills, will open with remarks from Mayor Slay and will conclude with a reflection piece about Dr. King. The project was made possible through a grant by the Missouri Campus Compact, the North Carolina Campus Compact and the Corporation for National and Community Service. Ameren generously donated the compact fluorescent bulbs.

Harris-Stowe Extends Smoking Ban to Outdoors
January 11, 2011

Monday marked the first day of the Spring Semester at Harris-Stowe State University, and new this semester, smoking is not only banned inside its buildings, but it is banned on the entire campus, including outdoor areas.
