Health Care Management

Degrees: Bachelor of Science in Health Care Management

Overview: The Health Care Management program at Harris-Stowe State University is designed to prepare students for careers in health care management in one of many different types of organizations in the community. Students are introduced to many types of health care organizations and are educated in both quantitative and qualitative techniques of analysis.

Curriculum: The HCM program is designed to prepare students to become managers in any one of a number of different types of health care environments, both public and private. The program offers a number of courses in various aspects of health care management, including health care organizations, health care law and ethics, health care planning and marketing, and financial management of health care institutions. HCM seniors also serve an internship at a local health care institution. HCM graduates are prepared to sign on to entry-level management positions in health care institutions and or continue their studies in graduate school.

Careers in the Field: Hospital department managers, hospital administrator/assistant administrator, nursing home administrator/assistant administrator, consultant and governmental health care agency employee


Business Administration with an Option in Management

Degrees: Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with an Option in Management

Overview: The Business Administration with an Option in Management provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to become effective managers in organizations. The courses in this program emphasize the complex nature of organizations and the skills and knowledge necessary to manage human resources, design effective organizational systems and diagnose and solve organizational problems. In addition, the program emphasizes the increasingly global nature of business and coping with change in the internal and external environments.

Curriculum: The purpose of the program is to prepare the student for the challenges of modern management by providing an overall understanding of the basic functions of management as well as appropriate skills and problem-solving methods. The program introduces students to the complexities of organizational variables such as human resources and materials or physical facilities and provides the student with appropriate frameworks for examining various institutions and the external environment in which these units operate. In developing an understanding of the interrelationships between the various management functions and the environment, emphasis is placed upon analytical problem solving, establishing strategies and policies, human relations and general management principles.
