: Retention Initiatives

Retention Initiatives at Harris-Stowe State University aim to address the social, emotional, and academic needs of students, critical to their persistence through and graduation from HSSU.

Retention is an on-going, multi-year process centered around data-driven programming, campus wide collaboration and frequent evaluation of student needs and interests.

THESE INITIATIVES INCLUDE:

Early Alert System

The Early Alert System allows faculty and staff to notify the Office of Retention of students who are at risk of failing courses due to academic, financial and/or social concerns. The Office of Retention contacts students to provide one-on-one assistance and develop plans that lead students to academic success.

Retention Committee

The Retention Committee is a group comprised of faculty and staff who look at policies, procedures and processes important to retaining students at HSSU. The team meets bi-weekly and offers recommendations to the Office of the Provost.

#15toFinish

15 to Finish is a statewide initiative that encourages students to take 15 hours each semester in order to graduate in 4 years. This initiative promotes retention and graduation through intrusive academic advising and financial counseling.

The Hornet Keeper Peer Mentor Program

This program pairs first-year students with a mentor who will assist them in navigating HSSU. Mentors apply, interview, train, and serve as university representatives and guides for students through social, emotional and academic transition to college.

DEPARTMENTAL COLLABORATIONS

HSSU 0100

HSSU 0100 is a one-credit hour Freshmen seminar course that serves as an introduction to higher education and an on-going orientation to resources offered Harris-Stowe State University.  This course is designed to help new students in their adjustment to university life through peer collaboration, values assessments, financial literacy, curriculum-goal-career alignment and more.

Living Learning Communities

LLC’s are specialized living environments that connect student’s inside- and outside-the-classroom experiences. Each LLC is unique, but all are centered on a distinctive theme or academic interest area.
