The Office of Academic Affairs News: HSSU-SLU School of Medicine Summer Internship Program

Harris-Stowe State University’s College of Arts & Sciences (CAS) collaborated again this summer with Saint Louis University (SLU) to provide a joint summer lab experience for three biology majors who participated in a six-week paid summer internship program at SLU’s School of Medicine, Department of Pharmacological and Physiological Sciences. HSSU interns, Davinelle Daniels, Gabrielle Pouncil and Jeannise Webb-Nelson, gained experience in biological research, medical school culture and basic lab techniques. Each presented their research activities to faculty and staff of HSSU and SLU.

Davinelle Daniels presented, “The Early Life Stress has on Varying Effects on Resilience in Drosophila Melanogaster Models Specific to Genotype and Stress Paradigms.” Daniels worked with Dr. Wendi Neckameyer, professor of Pharmacological and Physiological Sciences at SLU. Daniels expressed her research experience as inviting. “Under the direction of Dr. Neckamyer I learned more than I could ever imagine” said Daniels. “Dr. Neckamyer did a wonderful job of providing me direction and showing me the opportunities in this field.”

Gabrielle Pouncil presented, “Can We Create a Drug to Cure Acute Myeloid Leukemia Caused by AML1-ETO?”  Working with Dr. Jinsong Zhuang, associate professor of Pharmacological & Physiological Science at SLU, Pouncil found her experience to be very enjoyable. “Through this experience, I was happy to be able to apply the practices and techniques I learned in class,” stated Pouncil.

Jeannise Webb-Nelson worked with Dr. Terrance Egan, professor of Pharmacological and Physiological Science at SLU. Her presentation was “The Regulation of Pore Dilatation as it Interacts with FE65.” In reflecting on her experience she stated, “I am very thankful for this internship because it validated this is what I want to pursue as a career.”

Opportunities such as these will continue to elevate and expose HSSU students as they seek resources to help them excel in their professional careers.

“Many of the students in the CAS are making history, and we are delighted and proud of their accomplishments,” said Dr. Lateef Adelani, dean of the CAS.

Harris-Stowe State University values the relationship it has built with Saint Louis University through this collaboration. This partnership illustrates the strong commitment each institution has in providing opportunities and exposure to underserved students in the career fields of STEM.
